I live in Costa Rica now, in the Provence of Heredia. My place is in Barrio Mercedes Norte.

We have no army, and generals have a poor reputation among Latinos, so when I go the central park, I can see many busts of celebrated men, but they are all founders or public benefactors of some sort. We don't even have a "Swat Team." Police Chief does not wear stars or have scrambled eggs on his hat. Not many heroes of that sort, though a man named Figueros is much admired for kicking out the generals and dissolving the army in the late 1940's.

I was born in Illinois, Lee County, not far from Shabbona park and the village of Shabonna mentioned by one of the other responders.

I live in Savannah, GA, the first "planned" city in the colonies. There are 24 squares in the historical downtown area (it's also the largest national historical landmark in the country - or used to be) and many have statues of heros. Two that come to mind are Gen. Pulaski and Sgt Jasper.

Little town in northern Illinois. We have a stature for Civil war soldiers since a volunteer group was from our area. Our town hero was an Indian Chief name Shabonna. He warned the settlers of the pending attacks during the Blackhawk Indian wars. He is pretty well celebrated in an area of about 60 miles around our town. Some towns in Illinois are named after him and our courthouse has a number of artifacts from him.He is buried in one of our cemeteries.
