What happened to freedom of religion?
I'm not a lesbian, but I don't see what difference it makes to me if someone else is.

Jacob W, you basically said that it should stay that way because that's the way it always has been, and all these pesky happy people have to go and ruin our day.

Your question is an excellent example of how the liberals manage to frame the argument. Gay marriage has never been permitted in America. Therefore, it is incorrect to say that anyone is trying to "ban" it. Gays are asking for a right that no one has ever been permitted. That is something completely different.
Marriage has evolved from the earliest days of civilization. After many, many various changes all modern societies have reached the same conclusion. That one man married to one woman in a monogamous relationship where all offspring are the result of a union of the two is the absolute best way for families to be formed.
As a result of this finding, an ideal standard was decided upon. That ideal is called marriage. If people wish to live together, they may. If they wish to live with and be in relationships with many people they may. If they want to be in sexual relationships with people of the same or both genders, they may. If they wish to have children with various other partners, they may.
However, none of these choices are the ideal standard, It is as simple as that. That is all marriage is, a standard. Gays have never been required to marry nor have they been allowed to marry. But, for some reason, they seem to have just decided that they want to change thousands of years of tradition even though no one has presented on shred of evidence that it is in the best interest of society.
I contend that the ideal standard is still valid. It is the fact that more and more people have chosen not to follow that standard that has caused massive problems in our country. Now, more than ever, the ideal standard needs to be supported not degraded.
If gays what something like marriage they may have it. Call it "Larriage or Narriage" or domestic unions but do not call it Marriage. Marriage means what it means. It is not in our interest to change what it means.

They want to ban it because they are afriad it will harm or "lessen" the sanctity of a marraige.
Currently, I believe most states have a Civil Union. A legal contract between two people, then if you want a religious ceremony, you go to a church that performs gay marraige ceremonies. From what I understand, and I'm probably wrong, I think the civil unions don't give the tax breaks marraige does. I think they should, that would make it equal, in my opinion.

It's an issue that gets the religious right on board to vote for the same guy as the rest of the conservative right.
I guess the abortion horse has gotten a little tired in the last few years.

I really don't know. It seems to be a totally irrational fear of something, but I'm not sure what.
Maybe they think God will come down and turn everyone into a pillar of salt like in Soddam and Gomorrah. Like I said, an irrational fear.

For the most part, Republicans haven't been very conservative recently (look at their spending history, or their interfering in foreign countries), so they put forth these ideas that appeal to their political base to insure their support...
