True, germany has taken over that position from the US a couple of years ago ( for all those who don't believe it, check here : http://www.nytimes.com/2007/04/13/business/worldbusiness/13germany.html?ex=1334203200&en=dd2a6e97bf4035ac&ei=5124&partner=digg&exprod=digg)
However, one reason for that is simply that US-americans consume more than any other country, that means that a large part of american products is sold and used up in the US, while germany tends to have a weaker domestic market (germans tend to save their money, americans tend to spend it)

Germany is the largest member of the EU which is a free trade zone with a common currency and an interdependent economy. It imports 33% of GDP and exports slightly more. In contrast the US imports only 13%, because we are more self-sufficient, but export less which is beginning to cause problems. As a general rule the smaller the country the higher the percentage of its economy is due to imports and exports. Small European countries export over 60% of their GDP.

I hadn't realized until you mentioned the fact... they just beat China out...
Appears most of their exports are fine automobiles, good machinery and lottsa chemicals.
BMW, Mercedes should take a bow. Autos are a high-ticket item, largely high-tech and requires great engineering and careful assembly. A whole lot of value-added to cheaper raw materials. Same with machinery and chemical manufacturing.
Germans seem to be abundant in those capacities.

Your first error (sorry) is assuming that a "small" country wont export much. Germany is hardly small, compared to other European countries. And who says it has limited resources? Are you refering to natural resources? Industrial exports? Cultural exports?

hmmmmm....
my guess would be China...
.... well, whoever it is.. such country has to import a lot of 'raw' stuff to turn it not goods.... so it's strictly a matter of getting material to make it into something and sell it...
