Some feel that the embarrassment of rejection would hurt more than the pleasure of expressing themselves. It's human nature. But I think we've all had those situations where we decided to take a chance and say how we feel. It's the curiosity of wanting to know that drives us, but it's the fear that keeps us standing still.

Because they feel vulnerable, possibly insecure as well.

Especially true of people who have been hurt or rejected. There are many people though who feel very strongly, they just have a difficult time expressing emotion.

There are others who are simply brought up to keep their emotions in check.

I really do think the main reason is that so many have been hurt in the past by revealing themselves to someone else, that they become very wary of getting rejected or rebuked.

Not only do people hide from fear of rejection, but also from fear of growth, fear of reciprocation and all of its presumed responsibilities and possible troubles. So I guess in the end it can all be boiled down to fear of failure and fear of rejection after the fact.
