This could be coming from anywhere, the pump in the well to the faucet and anywhere in between. I just had the plumber out. He cleaned the well out. I couldn't believe we were drinking that water.
The Lady Bug Beetles had found a way into the well but, couldn't get out. I won't say how many thousands of them were in the well getting smashed into the well water. Then the water was being polluted with the oil leaking from the pump. The Tank in the house was old. It was full of rust and the switch wasn't working right. I just put in all 3/4 inch copper lines. I now have all new water and lines for 1800 bucks and it was worth the price. I also flush the water heater every spring and fall to get the sand out.
Maintenance is a priority here, I only wish the other guy thought of it too.

A filter would only plug up right away.

Yes you can get an in line filter, but it will soon plug up. The problem may be that your galvanized steel pipes are rusting. The permanent fix is to re pipe your house or just let the water run a little while before using any. How old is your hot water tank? The rust may be coming from there.

Sounds like a water heater problem. Need a new water heater or cleaned it out.
