I replaced the 350 in my '72 K5,new motor, new rebuilt Rochester 4 barrel carb, new fuel pump, and filters; but the problem is it won't start on its own. A little shot of starter fluid and it'll fire right up. The spark plugs and wires, coil, and distributor and good. I'm lost and just want it to work. If you have any ideas or suggestions please let me know.

no need to pump or mess around....the new rebuilt carb. is not right......pump once to the floor to set the choke & the accelorator pump should have allready injected enough fuel to start.......you have a bad rebuilt....take it back!

do some trouble shooting...pull the fuel line off at the carb and with a suitable container have someone crank it over and see if it's pumping fuel. IF it is not...you say you changed the fuel pump this is what I'd look at. On the suction side of the fuel pump...replace that rubber hose...it may be sucking air due to a hole or it may be collapsed. Another problem may be that the sock in the tank...it's a filter...may be plugged...take an air hose and attatchment and blow backwards through the fuel system...do this by removing the intake hose off of your fuel pump and apply air pressure that way. It does sound like you have a constriction in your fuel system.

Strainer in the tank may be plugged up and not allowing full fuel flow....take the line off at the pump coming from the tank and blow compressed air into it to clean off the strainer"sock" in the tank without having to drop the tank. Check the volume of fuel delivery from the new pump...should be like 1/2 a quart in a minute at cranking speeds and make sure the float in the carb isn't sticking or set at the wrong level. When you installed the pump, did you make sure the fuel pump arm engaged the pushrod in the block? Sometimes you can install them and the arm slips to one side of the pushrod.

sounds like the fuel to air mixture still aint right. maybe the carb isn't completely tuned. not letting in enough fuel or the engine isnt turning fast enough. is your battery strong? will it start without fluid if you have a charger or a second vehicle connected?
