Acer is a budget brand. They have relativly good value, and good monitors, but mediocre/[poor quality and tech support. Same with Gateway/eMachines. Value wise for a college student, I'd consider dell 1505 core2duo. There are plenty of good compac/hps and toshibas all good values. But if price is no object, xps or alienware.

Of course the apple macbooks and macbook pros are great, but if you are looking for something with a low budget, I wouldnt go with Acer. It is true they don't use the best parts, and are genarally not the best things you can buy. I recomend going to Dells website and building your own custom laptop. You can pick the size, the screen, the memory, the features, EVERYTHING. I got mine from there and I am more than happy with it and I have neevr had any problems

Dell Inspiron laptops are well made good all round machines at a reasonable price and they let you build it up as you order from the basic model.

I just bought a Compaq Presario C500 with Windows Vista. I have a Compaq desktop, which I have had 2 years, trouble free so far. I'm pretty happy with that brand.
