They can be scattered in national parks in the US, with a special permit. They can also be scattered on private property, with the owner's permission. Anywhere else without permits is illegal

Counties and municipalities differ across the nation. You need to check with the city in which you plan to scatter the ashes. For instance, most cities have restrictions about scattering within a public area. Oceans are generally 3 miles from shore, etc. State parks require permits. Most cities will happily provide a list of acceptable sites. You may also contact a local well known funeral home. There are services that offer scattering from a plane. One that I know of offers to add the ashes to wildflower seeds and scatter over a private property. Good luck with your inquiry, I am sorry if you have suffered a loss. I think so...but you should check with local authorities if you are concerned. Just be careful about spreading ashes that way. I read somewhere a story of someone who attempted to spread ashes from a plane and instead, ended up with ashes all over the back seat. Final resting place? A vacuum cleaner.

Yes, you can.

The FAA specifically allows things like ashes to be dropped from planes.

Environmental laws would not apply since the ashes are not a polluntant.

I'm not aware of any regulations.
I hope it's okay because I want my ashes to be scattered in the ocean off of a pier that I grew up visiting.

No law prohibiting ashes being dropped from an aircraft, as long as no damage is caused to persons or property.

Different answers for different jurisdictions.

Can be illegal under environmental rules or laws against "indignity to a human body" or something like that.
