Why was the 'Search and Destroy' policy such a bad tactic for the US in the Vietnam War?

because they hid and we couldnt find them but when we did they killed 2 soldiers for every 1 of theirs

The destroy part. Imagine a bunch of foreign troops wandering around your country and blowing up your village seemingly at random.
