I had a baby 5 weeks ago (c-section) and i noticed my stomach being tender today and then just a sec ago a penny sized (?) wad of tissue like stuff came out of my vagina. Should I go to the ER? I wouldn't normally sit around to ask but my hubby has the car. It looks like a darkened peice of meat (like chicken) and It has a stringy type thing attached to it. This is gross I know but I'm freaked out!!!

If you can, put the tissue in a plastic container and in the fridge.(Gross, I know, but important) Call the doctor who is seeing you, and arrange an appointment- today preferably. Take the tissue with you to the appointment, where they can take it to the lab for an examination to determine exactly what it is. You may have retained a piece of the placenta, or it may be just an unusual looking clot. No way to know without the lab. If it is a piece of the placenta, you may need to be admitted for a D&C to make sure nothing else is left to cause trouble. Obviously, you will want to call the hubby and have him return the car. No need to freak out, as long as you are otherwise healthy, it's probably nothing major and nothing that can't be fixed if needed. It happens, it's scarey, but nothing to panic over.

It's not a lost tampon, is it?

Don't fret too much. Ring your doctor and let them know. You might need to see your OBGYN or your family doctor to be checked but it isn't a life threatening thing.

Most likely it is a clot or some other post-delivery material that has waited some time to make it's appearance.

Call an ambulance:
(1) If you are VERY unwell - faint, pale, dizzy and light headed
(2) If you are gushing blood
(3) If you have bad fevers, poor appetite and other things that make you think of infection

I wouldn't go to the ER unless you are bleeding so much you soak more than one pad an hour for a couple of hours, or you develop a fever. I would call the ob/gyn who did your c-section and let him know. They'll tell you to come in to see them, or go to the ER. You can call the office after hours and there should be an answering service that will page him or whoever's on call for him. If not, call the maternity floor of the hospital where you delivered and tell them, and they will let you know whether or not you need to come in to the ER or wait until the doctor's office opens in the morning.
