The best computer to buy is the best one you can afford. Can you afford a supercomputer and a programming staff?
First, figure out how much you can afford to spend on a PC and make that your limit. Then, search everywhere for the fastest, most memory, fastest/largest hard disk, etc, that you can get for that money. Also consider included software, if you do not already own software that you will delete off your old PC.
PC Magazine from Ziff-Davis Publishing frequently speed tests many PCs, especially for gaming. You can read their benchmark tests to help get you started.

Usually you do NOT want a school or work comp for gaming or music. If cost is no object. 1 Falcoln Northwest 2 xps, 3 alienware, 4 voodoo. If VALUE is an issue, get a 1dell, 2 toshiba, 3 hp/compac. AVOID eMachines/gateway. How much is your budget, what type of gaming? You could easily spend 10,000 on an XPS or Falcoln but if you dont need that much, dont spend that much. I would get a MID or full size tower (NOT a mini tower) with a 256 vid card. 2 or 3g ramm, most people would want a 19 inch flat panel monitor. Just get the free speakers because you can buy better ones in a retail store. Don't worry about a good sound card unless youre a music editor, because even the best are not as good as a home stereo. Everybody will give you one or two dvd burners. Do NOT get an all in one printer, if it comes with, give it away and get a real printer.

If you are going to do gaming, I would go with the most powerfull CPU, most memory and the best card you can afford. if you are going to do any gaming, The faster the CPU and more memory you have and the better card you get the better it will play them. I would look at the core 2 duo and atleast 1 to 2 gig of memory and nothing less then a 7800. Thats what i say
