im 38 weeks 4 days and my doctor told me today that my cervix isnt softened or dilated at all but there seem to be loads of women on here who have been effaceing and dilating since 34 weeks and all. i know i maybe wont dilate at all till closer but i was under the impression that your cervix thins out a few weeks in advance. is it normal that i havent? i had a missed miscarriage last year and my cervix wasnt for opening at all, they did a d&c so that has me a bit worried.
anyway thanks for any help

Every woman and every pregnancy is different. With my 4th pregnancy, I was 41 weeks and had absolutely no sign of impending labor. My cervix was not thinning and I was not dilated at all. Because I was 38 years old and had Gestational Diabetes, my doctor wanted to try a cervix softening gel insertion to see if that would get things moving a bit since he really didn't want me to go another week or he would induce (which I didn't want). I went in for a routine weekly non-stress test and ultrasound, was given an internal exam and then prepped for the gel insertion. This was about noon. I was told I had to lay on my side for an hour, they would check me and then send me home to see what happened, if anything. Shortly after the insertion, I began cramping, which they told me might happen then I began having long strong contractions lasting 5-6 minutes which put the baby in distress with a very low heart rate (down in the teens and 20's! - scared me to death). Things moved quickly from there. I was prepped for a pitocin drip, but when they checked me for progress found that I was at 5 cm already! She was born at 7:39 PM after a push and 1/2 (I was motivated to get her out!). With my middle daughter, I was effaced and dilated 2-4 cm for 6 weeks before I went into labor.

My cervix never thinned out or dilated before 40 weeks. Sometimes it will happen slowly over a period of several weeks, and sometimes not till the very end. Both ways are completely normal.
