Doesn't matter what the food is like, you tip the server for the service thy're providing for you. 20% is acceptable I don't care what anyone else thinks about doubling the tax nonsense! 20% unless the server is extremely rude. This is how they make their money. They are working for below minimum wage per hour! Cheap people get me mad!
I wouldn't eat out again with them either.

Friends who don't tip should eat at home. Bad food is not an excuse not to tip.
Bad service is an excuse to tip less perhaps, but completely stiffing a server is not acceptable.
I usually tip 20%. More if the service is great, less if the service isn't so great.
If I plan to come back again, I'll often tip 20%, even if the service sucks, just so I get treated better the next time. It works. I get comped drinks and desserts all the time. I get good tables without having to wait. What goes around comes around.

Their excuse wasn't even good. You are tipping for the service...not the food. If the food is bad send it back, the waitress has no control over the food, but a good one will send it back in a heartbeat if the patron complains. Glad you covered your "friends". Sounds like they are just cheap. I wouldn't go out to eat with them anytime soon.

I would be mad too. If the server gives good service then they deserve a good tip. The food not being great is the cooks fault not the servers fault. If they don't want to tip then they don't need to go out to eat. These people pretty much make their money from tips.

Yeah, that would make me mad. It's not the waitress's fault the food wasn't good. They're not tipping the cooks. That was nice of you to cover the tip for them.

Well the food being bad is not the waitresses fault. You were right to tip the waitress. I totally agree with you. If the food is bad, send it back.

Ofcours!!! It would make me mad!!! people make their living off tips! Just tell your friends that thanks to their kindness, that poor girl will probably be eating ramen noodles tonight, and she had nothing to do with the quality of the food, she just serves it. If they have an issue with the food, they should have spoken to a manager or someone in the kitchen, classic case of don't shoot the messenger, of course, maybe they are just cheap, in which case I think what you told them was perfect and I wouldn't go out with them again either! Jerks!!

It is rude for someone not to leave a tip, those waitresses are up on their feet all day and the least the person could do is leave a tip!
Have a wonderous day!

hell yea wouldn't that make you mad? tip is essential with their salary. so its like your not giving the waitress no pat on the back or no thank you for serving me. i think its wrong, no one should be covering anybodies tip you guys should each pitch in tip that's the correct way to do it and it saves you change. and you are a good friend for tipping that waitress. we need friends like you in the world more.

I agree with you. Tipping isn't about the food, it's about the service. If they don't want to tip, then don't go out to eat ! That was nice of you to cover them.
