For a first notebook, try a dell 1505 with core2duo. This is a good bang for the buck (VALUE) unit onthe market and the one I'm getting for my niece for her graduation. There are plenty cheaper, there are pllenty more expensive. There are plenty more powerful and plenty that a re just garbage.

I would say Toshiba because almost everybody i know has it and you don't need to fix it a lot like those other notebooks.

anything Dell, and purchase it in the store.......a Dell store or Best Buy, which is where I got mine, but my fiance got his at a Dell station in the mall
