A common phenomena. I really can't say I know the "reason why", but I have heard it said that the one true instinct humans are born with (aside from suckling) is a fear of falling, and that the sensation you noted has something to do with that.

shut up, i always thought it was just me, yeah, i hate it and it happens to me almost all the time, I'm falling' asleep and then b*tch I'm falling, and i freak out usually, and jump, i hate it.

it's a very common thing, it's just your brain still going active, dreaming away, while your body feels that it needs to react to something, ive knocked over many end stands because i was throwing a baseball or taking a slapshot.

Umm... kind of... like yesterday I was on my friend's trampoline and then when I was laying in bed I still felt like I was bouncing and it was kinda making me sick.
