Our son is graduating from 6th grade (only school he has ever attended to date) and will be attending middle school next Fall. We have 50/50 joint custody but cannot agree on which school district to send him.

Our son has expressed a very strong interest in staying enrolled in his current district and he is a good, smart kid.

But, one of the parents lives in the next town over and really wants to switch districts for the last 6 years of public school.

Where and how do we do to figure this dilema out? What happens if we don't ever agree? There is also a difference of how much/ whether or not to count our son's opinion.

Thank you for your advice!

If one parent lives in the district where your son currently goes to school, PLEASE let that child stay with his friends in his current school district. All of his friends are there. It is very disturbing for a child to have to move schools as a teenager. Don't do this to him if he asks you not to.

Who has him more of the time? Do you share legal custody as well? If it comes down to it, and you are both looking out for what's best for your son, try not to make him switch districts. It's hard at that age to make all new friends, and I'm speaking from my own experience. If it's a matter of convenience for one of you, ditch the idea. If it's about better schools, safer communities, it's something worth considering.
If you guys can't agree, you can always look to the court for some help, using mediation or arbitration(but that's always gonna cost $). Good luck!

Well, I am wondering what the reason is for each side to feel so strongly...is it the academic rating of the school systems? Is it merely convenience? Also, are you looking beyond the middle school and then at the high school? I think that it is really important for kids to stay with the kids they went to school with, if at all possible. If he changes due to some random reason, he will be the new kid...is it worth it?

Since you have 50/50 custody he will be in both school districts. Why can't you enroll him in both schools? That's what my father and his first wife did when they had 50/50 custody of my step sisters. They went to school where we lived when they lived with us and then went to school where their mother and stepfather lived when she had them.
It's not a major dilemma.
