What would you say to someone who is not technically savvy in order to explain how a general model of telecommunications works?

A good analogy for the internet is just like "MAIL". A user can send a letter to an address within a city state and zip code. The letter itself is the message, the address and zip is the destination and the postal system is the medium by which it is transmitted. You can also "broadcast" by sending the same "letter" or "magazine" to multiple locations. It is paid for by taxes and by stamps.

Narrowcasting is knowing that a certain market will listen to a certain type of music and advertisers place their ads on who will be likely to listen. For instance you won't hear too many bmw ads on rap music stations and you wont hear too many clearasil ads on jazz stations. The food network will often apeal to a diffferent client than milatary channel. (In my case I listen to then all but that is how narrocasting works.)

For TV/radio broadcsating transmitter is the sender, the content is the music or tv show, the medium is the airwaves, and the recipient is the radio or tv. There are multiple channels all broadcasting at the same time, but radio tuners tune into the content that i desired. It is paid for by advertisement.
