given y varies inversely as x.

a.) if y is 8 when x is 3, find x when y is 4.

b.) if x is 12 when y is 5, find y when x is 15

c.) if y is 16 when x is 1/2, find x when y is 1.

d.) the frequency of a vibrating string is inversely proportional to its length. A violin string 10 inches long vibrates at a frequency of 512 cycles per second. Find the frequency of an 8-inches string.

If y varies inversely as x, then when you double y you must halve x

x times y equals a constant (let's call it "c")

y = c/x

(a)
if you halve y then you must double x. This is to say if you are multiplying y by (1/2) you must then multiply x by (2/1) the inverse of (1/2)

x = 6

(b)
x is multiplied by 15/12 (or 5/4) therefore you must multiply y by the inverse (4/5)

y = 4

(c)
You multiply y by 1/16
Therefore you must multiply x by 16/1

x = 8

(d)
if you multiply the string length by 8/10 you must multiply the frequency by 10/8

So frequency = 5120/8 = 640 cycles per second

a. 8/3 = 4/x as you can see, y is halved, so inversely x is doubled. x is 6.

b. 12/5 = 15/x in this one x is multipled by 1 1/4, so y will be divided by it. the answer is 5/ 1.25 = 4

c. 16/.5 = 1/x y is divided by 16, so x is multiplied by 16 to make it 8.

d. 10/512 = 8/x same thing here, y is divided by 1.25, so 512*1.25 is the answer.

i know how to do the first one im pretty sure.

y = 8 and x = 3, so you want y to be 4, so that would be half the original number, so you do half of 3 too.

so x would be 1.5
