I did this today, and forgot to ask if it was a free service, i'd hate to get a surprise bill!

They probably won't send you a bill, but it might be a nice gesture if you bought a couple of dozen donuts and brought them down to the cop station...

I'm surprised they even came out. Around here they would have told you to call a tow truck or locksmith. The police are way to busy to respond to open cars for people.

If you do this often, add towing to your auto insurance policy. It only costs about 10-20 bucks a year and it covers, towing, spare tire service on the road, bringing you gas and opening your locked car.

Carry an extra set of keys in your pocket.

As for unlocking your car no, they shouldn't charge you anything. Although where I live they aren't allowed to do that anymore due to liability reasons. Plus the cops where I live are too lazy to get out of their car for anything anyhow.

You should call a locksmith.
Locksmiths don't chase criminals and cops don't respond to dummies who lock themselves out of their cars.
