Some liberals are convinced that 'liberal' has become a prejorative, and they are the self-apointed champions of not giving offense (Political Correctness). You can't not offend people like that. They exist in a perpetual state of offense, and they percieve the world only in those terms.
So, Democrat to describe the US party and Liberal to describe thier broad philosophy is about as good as you can do.
Avoid: lie-beral, commie, America-hater, or moonbat.
Be careful with 'socialist' - it accurately describes a lot of the liberal agenda, but the Democrats, for instance, are not genuine socialists.

According to liberals, only liberals have freedom of speech. They can call you anything they like and if you object you are being a racist bigot homophobe, and maybe islamophobic also. Any words you use will be called hate speech by liberals if the words you use are accurate and honest.
I'll bet you a beer on that. Can we say beer, or do we have to say carbonated malt based adult beverage?

It really won't matter what you say or call them; if you disagree with them they will "hate" you. The left is far more intolerant of those who disagree with them - then the right is.
