Once there was a snail. He was a very hungary snail. So he ate a candybar, but the candy bar made him feel sick. He then tried potatoe chips, but those made him sick too. Next he tried a lollipop, a jawbreaker, and cookies, but those even made him teeth hurt. Then he decided to eat a healthy apple and he felt all better. Eat healthy food.
Ok, that's really bad, and is too much like "the Hungary Caterpillar" but I hope it gives you an idea. You could also write a story about a "pretty penguin" anything about cute animals. Little kids love that, and things with bright colors. Anything to that affect.

They're STILL giving that same assignment? So much for innovation. Okay, the way to an A is to have it end with a lesson learned, moral fiber, yadda yadda yech. You get a fuzzy animal (bunnies work good, teddy bears can be for boys or girls), and you spend 9 sentences on something he sucks or fails at, etc. the next 4 lines are seeking and finding help, confidence, etc. The last 4 are trying and acheiving goal. It's the same formula with all kiddie books that size. Stick to generic crap and you may get published. Next to a thousand childrens' tomes that are exactly the same.

Write about a girl named Sweetie who tried to bake a cake for her mom on Mother's Day, and went all over town for each ingredient(to the baker for flower, to the mill or whatever for butter, to the farmer for milk, etc.) and then when she finished the cake was burned and the mom will see and she'll say, "it's ok, it's the thought that counts".
awwww...
Name could be Sweetie because it's unusual, it should be, she's baking a cake which is sweet, and she herself is sweet. And I pictured it as people/animals/whatever living in the forest so there was such a thing as going to the farmer for milk and all that, makes the whole story. Hope this helps.

Take a look at Aesop. He can give you some great ideas.
You could take the Shrek approach and do a spoof on a fairy tale. Or you could have a story with a moral. Or you could do both. Just be creative and have fun with it.
Just remember with whatever you do that you can't do it wrong. Any way you do it is perfect.

Most children like stories with a very small conflict and few characters. It can't be confusing. Animal stories are definetely popular. Simple conflicts, like a missing shoe or "time for a bath" and little things like that are easy to write about and easy for kids to read.
