hard to comprehend how some people in America believe that 9-11 was an inside job. How could they believe that the American government would kill its own citizens and/or destroy its own buildings?. Are these conpsiracy theorists nut cases or ...?.

Some are nuts some have built a high level of distrust because of a government that has failed its people repeatedly. Some believe (rightfully so in some cases) that our government puts financial motives before the welfare of its people. So when you add it all up it isn't such a stretch to believe that a government could conjure up an event. Especially when they have documentation that suggest that Americans would only support a war after a catastrophic event. I don't buy it, but it isn't a far stretch of the imagination.

Back in 2006,more than a third of Americans believed either federal officials were part of 9/11,or did nothing to stop it. Personally I'm surprised it was that many. I don't know the percentages for today though.

I don't believe them, but hypothesizing, I would guess it's kind of like the Bible (I'm going to get a lot of thumbs down for this one).

For those who have faith (this doesn't necessarily mean in religion, this is a general statement), if there are missing bits of information, or things that cannot be explained or things that are not revealed, and someone, with a predisposition to a certain way of thinking, will fill those holes with information as they see fit. This doesn't mean it has to be proven scientifically, but if you follow something, and it best fits your way of thinking, you will have faith in it.

I consider myself an open and progressive person, but even after having seen the conspiracy theories, I take note, but still find them a stretch. Even though I disagree with the policies and practices of this administration, I cannot conceive of faulting them for 9/11. Though many governments have and still do kill their own citizens and destroy their own buildings (think Darfur, Rwanda, Nazi Germany, 4th Crusades, etc.).

My point is, you don't have to agree with someones theory, but you shouldn't call them nutcases, because religion is, after all, based on much theory as well.

Chris Carter, the creator of X files, mooted the idea of airline terrorism in the "Pilot" episode of his spin off series the Lonegunmen.

Interestingly, the "Pilot" episode suggest the theory that elements within the US government is committing acts of terrorism on US soil, to support the military industrial complex.

The episode was broadcast 5 months before the fateful day on Sept 11.

Now the interesting question. Did Chris Carter's idea gave the terrorist an idea to carry out airline terrorism, or he had insider knowledge that such an event was about to take place???

I have attached the video footage of the "Pilot" episode from youtube for your viewing pleasure...

Some conspiracy theorists really are on the looney side.

Many, though, are just drawn to it because something about the theory agrees with thier beliefs better than does reality.

It can also be emotional. Some actually find it more comforting to think that the whole thing was faked, or, at least, that it was carried out by people who don't have a good reason to do it again, than to think that there are crazy people out there who really do fly planes into buildings just because they hate us.

They’re either people who watch the X-Files, believe Pearl Harbor was a conspiracy also, think the moon landings were faked, and that the US military works on captured UFOs from Roswell at Area 51. Or they are Muslim Jihadist immigrants or Islamofascists that “became” American citizens (like the 6 Jihadist Muslims that wanted to kill US soldiers stationed in Fort Dix, New Jersey and the Bosnian Muslim refugee who killed several shoppers in a mall in Utah) want to place blame on the US government not their Muslim brothers because of the X-File people I aforementioned.

Maybe because the people in the WTC towers had INSIDE JOBS as opposed to working outside?

You would think it would be obvious. What is a tall skinny tower going to do when hit by an airliner traveling at between 200-400 miles per hour? A small 10 mph wind will cause the 9th floor of the Darth Vader building in Seattle to sway back and forth like a ship at sea.

I like to mess with them and tell them Al Gore did it because he lost the election.

At root, I think the answer has more to do with the scope of the attack, and the inevitable realization that we were simply that vulnerable.

All cheap politics aside, the fact is that we were, indeed, horribly vulnerable to an attack such as this, and it's difficult for some to come to grips with this fact, without having to manufacture a justification. Such realities are simply too hard to comprehend alone for some, I think.

I've heard that Americans have a strange obsession with conspiracy theories. Whatever the case is, they believe it becaue they hate Bush more than Bin-Laden. I do not like Bush (this is coming from a conservative who has renounced political parties alltogether), I did not like Clinton, but I don't hate either of them. The far left of this country just simply hates Bush to the point that they believe that people like Bin-Laden or Saddam are victims of Bush.

Because they either hate the administration and are willing to make America look bad just to hurt the administration, or they just plain hate America so much that they actually believe the conspiracy theory because they use it to rationalize their hatred by imagining that the giovernment really is that evil.

Either way, they are tin foil hat wearing moonbats in my book.

united_states_of_fatso above me has a really good answer too (assuming the conspiracy theorist doesn't hate America)
