I'm going to be a neurosurgeon when I grow up. I've been looking at some colleges, but I need to know what I need to major in so that my search won't be in vain.

Probably biology, or bio-chem, but make sure to take lots of classes on lots of different things. You could also try for a pre-med course.

You can major in whatever you want as long as you complete the pre-med curriculum in college plus advance science and mathetical courses. The first step to becoming a neurosurgeon is to get into a MD program. Work towards applying to medical schools now. When you choose your undergraduate college, make sure it has a pre-medicine or pre-health profession advisory committee. Meet with the advisor and discuss your plans. Your advisor will help you plan your curriculum and course plan.

You're getting too far ahead of yourself. There are certain courses you'll need to take (check the AAMC website), but college is a long, long way from your subspecialty. Get a good general education, and let medical school and residency teach you about neurosurgery. The one thing to consider is that most of your patients will never get well, so humanities, philosophy, and things that help you and your future patients cope mightn't be bad to have in your background.

Since you would have to go to medical school before specializing in neurosurgery, probably something like biology would be most appropriate as a pre-med undergraduate major. Go to a school with a strong science program and good labs, and I would say that a school with a strong focus on student research would be good for you as well.
