It makes all your clocks run backwards and your light bulbs suck all of the light from the room.
ps.. don't open the doors, you'll let all of the dark out.
just kidding, obviously. It might short out the box, and pop the breaker or fuse, depending on the box configuration, but maybe not. AC power doesn't have a + or - side, so the meter itself could work no matter which way it was installed, but most meters are more than simply a =/- connection.
On a related note, if you generate your own power in some way (solar power, generator etc. ) and have a newer meter, your meter MAY actually run backwards if you generate more power than you consume.

No. It's not possible to install it upside down becasue the utility company has a seal they're required to install after a meter is set. In order for you to install it upside down, the seal will invariably be broken, then when they come to read the meter, they will immediately cut off your power, then take you to court for tampering with a federally regulated energy source. On the bright side you won't have to worry about energy bills for quite some time, since you'll be spending the next year or so in the state pen.

The older ones would. Now they have 5 prongs and won't fit in the meter base upside-down.

Whether it will or not, you'll never know because you'll have to be on the site when they plug one in and ask them to try it, they will say "no" I'm sure.
There's a heavy fine to unplug one of these so "hands off" my friend. This is probably an urban legend.
Go to "Snoops.com" and check it your self.

no..........that,s the natural gas meter there thinking of......used to be able to do that but they caught on......all utility,s are watching for cheater,s.....once was a time you could slow your electric meter with a strong magnet......but then they made them of brass& aluminum....but inadvertantly changed the glass cover to plastic.....allowing a small hole to be drilled in the bottom...so you could insert a pin to stop the wheel gauge....the utility company,s now employ people whose job is to out think all the trickster,s.....& stop them before they can do any harm.

It's considered grand theft and is a good way to end up with a cell mate named Guido who really wants to know what you're in for.
