I like quotes, I like people who use quotes, I believe they tell an important story.

This is from a quote, do you think it is correct in light of todays political direction in AMerica?

"You cannot bring prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot help small men by tearing down big men.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot lift the wage earner by pulling down the wage payer.
You cannot help the poor man by destroying the rich.
You cannot keep out of trouble by spending more than your income.
You cannot further brotherhood of men by inciting class hatred.
You cannot establish security on borrowed money.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away man's initiative and independence.
You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

It wasn't Lincoln who said it, which is a common misconception, it was William J. H. Boetcker, 1916 , and it is clever but I know nothing of him so I am reluctant to comment in case this is the only wise thing he ever said.

Yeah... A little dated perhaps but not too bad...

I can see the intentions of the author and agree wholeheartedly but as quotes, some are a bit wimpy... A negative statement, "this is not" relies on a general positive implication; which appears OK until you apply it to a specific situation.

Take the first one for example; stated positively it would read, "Encouraging thrift brings prosperity." This is a 'conservative' approach; lets try not to waste what we already have - I'm not saying don't be thrifty, but as a means to prosperity it is obviously flawed. Encouraging productiveness (initiative) leads to prosperity.

Like all of them. And like the last one "You cannot help men permanently by doing for them what they could and should do for themselves."

Says so much for what the Liberals stand for today. Give and not expect anything back.

Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach him how to fish and he will feed his family for life.

Thanks.

How true it must of been. Lib couldn't wait to give thumbs down about teaching a person to fish and feed his family for life! Don't you just love it when they show their true attitudes.
