As long as your house/apartment is wired for cable you should be able to do it. Cable TV companies that provide high speed Internet services should provide an option to sign up just for the Internet access and not the TV services. The cost of Internet is usually more expensive as compared to when you are also getting TV services, but almost anything is better than dial-up.

If your home is not wired for cable, DSL (check with your phone company) is not available, and DirectTV broadband is not provided in your area (http://www.directv.com/DTVAPP/discover/broadbandBundle.jsp) then your options are rather limited. Clearwire (http://www.clearwire.com/) is a high speed wireless broadband provider but they are not available in most areas.

Other than that, dial-up may be all thats available at the moment, but broadband is growing all the time, so dont give up!

If your house is serviceable by cable then you can get broadband Internet, I am also in the process of doing just the same as you. I currently have Direct TV. and I am getting Internet with Earthlink/Time Warner cable. You might go to Earthlink.net and put your information in there availability forum, that will tell you if you can get them. Otherwise, if you are not serviceable by cable then you can go to satellite (direct way)Internet its costly and slower still faster then dial up, but if its your only option maybe its worth it. The going rate on earthlink right now with out cable or phone EarthLink High Speed - Cable
Downstream speeds of up to 5.0 Mbps
Special Offer:$29.95/month for the first 6 months
Monthly Charge: $41.95 /month thereafter. Also Msn has a partnership with some cable companies as well so if you go there you can also see if you might qualify for something with them. Hope this helps.

in case you do no longer watch television that's quite much relatively going to be extra cost-effective to get DSL somewhat of cable get admission to. although in maximum situations you may get a lots swifter cable connection the DSL, so in case you do a great variety of streaming or have 3 or 4 human beings utilizing the internet connection at a time you may prefer cable. In my experince maximum cable companys do supply cable information superhighway without television provider, although each and every so often that's purely as high priced as getting person-friendly cable to boot ( For a jointly as the place I lived it replaced into relatively extra cost-effective to have person-friendly cable and cable information superhighway then cable information superhighway on my own.) . additionally i've got chanced on that often it is common to get some channels on cable television once you're purely signed up for information superhighway provider.

If you are on a laptop, you can get a broadband card, and you will be wireless. Cost about 50 to 80 a month. But you do have the advantage to be connected where ever you go. Even on vacation.

100 time faster. But to answer your question. No you have to have cable. You could get DSL, and that is better than dialup. Downloads are faster.
