I feel that the term "oriental" is only derogatory when you say it in a derogatory way. However, I would much rather prefer the term Asian because Oriental seems like a term for something exotic, and can be derogatory. I definitely suggest using Asian instead. Thanks for asking!

I can relate. I am Jewish, and never felt this way growing up, and go thought phases, but lately, I am hesitant to be very open about being Jewish. It actually sounds to me like the same feeling. I don't know why it is. I have never lived in a place where I felt terrible anti-Semitism, but I just don't come out and scream it. I don't wear my Jewish jewelry, generally, either, unless I'm going to a function at schul. There is nothing degrading, or negative about the word, unless you lump us all together and say they all....just as with any group. Interestingly, Judaism is more diverse in terms of what people do, observe, which customs are adhered to or eschewed, than almost any other group of people. We are from different countries all over the world, and our customs vary at home, according to our individual backgrounds, and at schul, according to the agreed upon/dictated by rabbi/denomination customs. In any case the reason you are hesitant to use the word, itself, is because it is a label, and in this climate of political correctness, we are all hesitant to use any labels for people, for fear that we are going to step on someone's toes.

Oriental just means 'east'. So it is like saying easterner and not derogatory unless you mean to be insulting. It is a broad term because originally lots of people from middle eastern to far eastern people could be called that. Better off just obtaining the knowledge to know where everyone is from. I could tell all different types of Asian people apart and I can tell all different European peoples apart. I can also tell all the Middle eastern nationalities apart and I am trying to learn all the different African nationalities. Knowledge is power.

A couple of hundred years ago, Europeans made quite a study of people from the far east and their 'exotic' culture. Basically, they turned advanced civilizations into their fantasies of opium, spices and mysterious women. Oriental was the term they used.

Leaving that word behind was necessary to moving the European view of Asian cultures towards something that more closely resembles reality.

"Chinese,The Most Envied Race/Civilization

huge land, a pure race, culturely, great economy, great technology, strong military and nukes, most thoughtful leaders, independent political system, physically superior(olympics)"

Not a very good place to live, for a person who is not a politician. Theyre poor as **** seriously, because of the government.

They take technology- the ones that make it are the Japanese. and they were getting their *** wooped by Japan in WWII until America saved them.

"thoughtful leaders"- Communist leaders are thoughtful?

"physically superior"- How many times have you seen a buff chinese guy? or one with a good "tool"?

No, because the word "Aisan" applies to Indians, Pakistanis, etc. as well as Japanese, Chinese, etc. I don't think it is a deragatoy term.

the huge land and pure race combination is enough. mongrels (americans), and losers from failed races=civilizations(small countries) envy the pure and almighty Chinese race
