More than likely it needs to be replaced. But what are the steps by steps to loosening the cable.

Look up your bike here and look at "Handlebars ('80)

#13 is the lock nut
#12 is the adjuster
Loosen the lock nut.
Turn the adjuster till there is 1/8" - 1/4" of free play in the cable.
Free play means you can pull the clutch lever away from the pearch (the lever is bolted to the pearch) until there is tension pulling on the cable.
Then tighten the lock nut.

I would suggest, with a bike that old, that it may be time for a cable replacement. I had to do so with my 1979 Yamaha. When I replaced the cable I had to adjust the clutch plate/tensioner so that it engaged properly.
From what you have described, I think that is what you will need to do. With a good manual, like a Haynes or Clymers, some basic hand-tools, and a new clutch cable, you should have the job done in an afternoon.

adjust the cable so when you pull in on the lever you have about 1/8" play before you feel tention. That should get you back right.
