The Hadean is the oldest Eon of the precambrian, and lasted from the formation of the earth until about 4000 million years ago, and is the interval of earth's history for which essentially nothing (apart from the occasional highly resistant mineral grain) survives. It is followed by the Archaean eon, for which abundant (although usually very mangled!) rocks survive.

I think the word comes from greek mythology, Hades, the underworld.
