St John's Wort sometimes works for mild depression; you mustn't take it if you're on the Pill, and it also interacts with numerous other medications, so bear that in mind.
It's great that you're searching for a natural remedy for depression. Have you considered chinese herbs? I found them helpful for a while, and they're pretty safe so long as you go to a reputable chain.
If for any reason time is slipping by and you don't find a natural solution to the depression, then counselling and cognitive behavioural therapy can help. Also, don't dismiss medication out of hand, if nothing else does the trick. Many, many people do benefit from anti depressants. Depression is horrible!

just one thing about natural anti-depressants. many of the ideas above are good but you have to be very careful with St. Johns wort. It triggers the production of a protein in the body that actually speeds the secretion of medications.....any medication so say you are on heart medications and you take st johns wort. the drug may not stay in your body long enough to have benefit so you could die from the heart condition you were treating before. Your pharmacist should have a desk reference of all herbs and their known interactions that can be great so you can ask them if it will interfere with anything. There is a supplement that is really nourishing to the brain called ATTEND by VAXA it is worth checking out. but the fish oils are really good to take as well as getting enough sun and exercise.

I am currently taking an Omega-3 supplement in the form of fish oil capsules. It works wonders for generalized depression.
Also, B-Vitamin supplements are good as well.
Remember though, NEVER EVER take anything before checking with a physician without knowing how it will affect you.
Especially uncommon supplements/herbs and such that you've never heard of or taken before.

The best natural thing is St. John's Wort. I have a seretonin imbalance, which causes depression, and that's what my dr, and mom, who is an herbalist, said to try.

Try liquid Iodine from the health food store. Hypothyroidism and low estrogen will cause depression.
