What??????

Power over ethernet is a way of suppling power to network devices using ethernet cable and not needing to plug the device into a wall power outlet. It can not take the place of a router. Someone is really lost here.

In order to connect a router to a computer you will either need to run a ethernet cable from the modem to a computer or a USB connection.

Or you can purchase a wireless router and a wireless network adapter.

Or you can purchase a regular router, a wireless access point and a wireless network adapter

Or you can purchase a regular router and connect it to a computer using ethernet cable.

Thats it.....

It sounds like you are looking for "Powerline" ethernet. "Power over Ethernet" is something different.

What you have described is the correct setup. Powerline ethernet is subject to some noise issues but most of those have been worked out. You will need to buy a powerline adapter: plugging anything ethernet into a wall outlet without one will cause your ethernet device to make a loud pop and possibly a fire, too. I think D-Link sells a powerline kit.

For a small number of connecting devices I suspect you'll be happy with powerline connections; for more than two or three I'd suggest going wireless anyway, as it will be cheaper in the long run and give you better performance in the short run.

Start by re-positioning the router. Mount it as high as possible, clear of obstructions. They normally end up on the floor, tucked behind everything on the desk, or standing on other electrical equipment, any of which reduces signal. If this does not help, you may need to get a wireless range extender, which can be sited between the router and the furthest machine.

Yeah, they sell a convertor at Radio Shack... but it is expensive. You would need TWO, one for each end. They also sell the same thing to go over telephone jacks.

Good luck and Happy Computing!
