Myth is the song and account of the inspired poet. On them, humanity built her cultural life. Culture is a child of myth. If culture languishes, civilization perishes.

The myths teach the notion of the sacred, show the twin heights of beauty and meaning, and allow serene navigation in life.

The myths sustain the spiritual life of generations, the art of ages, and the very pillars of society.

Read Joseph Campbell. He made an entire career out of this subject.

Myths impart ethic advice, entertain, discuss life events like Marriage, coming of age, etc. They are sometimes primitive attempts to explain and understand the world around us. Some give religious advice. Often they are like Urban Myths in that they warn us about the possible consequences of bad action. They are subconscious and usually not about hat they seem to be about.

The Frog Prince is one of Campbell's most famous discussion. It isn't about a little girl who has a bad tiem with a frog, it's about the transition of a young couple from single individuals to married couple.

They originated mostly as religions which are now obsolete like the Ancient Greek and Roman ones, though they also incorporate folklore and superstition. They are now treated as stories for entertainment, but this helps them survive. It's interesting that some people have gone back to worshipping the gods of Greece, but the pagans have been doing that in imitation of the druids, etc., for decades, at least.
