Oh they didn't "fail" entirely, we the taxpayers of the USA pay money into NPR to broadcast the liberal view, whether anyone listens or not. Conservative talk radio has enough followers it pays for itself, the consumer dictates what is popular or not, that's why the liberal slant of the TV news media is slipping so badly, not everyone needs to be told what teh truth is, some people like to hear both sides and decide for themselves. And you can work while listening to radio, TV watchers tend to be the couch potatoes whining about how they can't find "suitable" employment or get more government benefits.

I'm really not sure. It could be the nature of talk radio. You don't just listen to a complete message, you hear unscripted disagreement, you choose a side, you think about your own position - maybe you even call in yourself. Some people seem to love to listen to talk radio that they disagree with.
For instance, liberals often pick up on something Bill O'Riely or Rush say - that's 'cause they're listening.
The liberals already do very well in all other media - from entertainment, like music and movies, to news on mainstream TV and papers, to more analytical news on PBS. What those media all have in common is that they're one-way. You package a politically correct message, you polish it, and you present it complete and unquestioned to the viewer.
On talk radio - and on the internet, for that matter - there's upstream communication to deal with.

Lefty Dorks and microphones don't get along well. As soon as the dork opened it's mouth the microphone knew it was being lied to. That's when they resorted to having Al Sharpton stand out in front of the radio station with a bull horn. Ole' one watt Sharpton.

The only way Air America stayed on the radio was stealing money from the Boy's Club. Pathetic is what it is.

Personally, I'd rather hear something new than listen to the same, tired diatribes repeatedly...and I'm not even a liberal. Political talk radio lacks creativity. I'd rather hear raw opinions than what some entertainer thinks I want to hear.

They failed because of the lying DORKS they had hosting the programs.
The DNC wrote the scripts.

The fact that only "dorks" listen to talk radio is the REASON the left hasn't succeded. The "dorks" who enjoy neo-con chat wouldn't find non-sensationalistic thought-provoking talk entertaining.
You answered your own question.
