The Wireless Access Point must be as high as possible to cover the most ground.

In addition any electrical wiring in the wall(s) between you and the Access Point will weaken the signal quickly.

Options include purchase of a more powerful antenna or a repeater to extend the signal around such obstacles.

In addition USB wireless is not as powerful as a PCI card or laptop PCIMCIA card due to limits of the power supplied by the USB cable.

You can also move the USB device to a better position (trial and error).

Get an extention USB lead and raise the adapter higher or closer to the wireless router.

You need to get closer to the connection, otherwise they don't connect well. Or you can buy a better USB wireless adapter that has a higher range.
