two come to mind... but the best was Kris Kristofferson... he had the lyrics, the tune, everything perfect on his songs... Willie Nelson is a close second, but without a doubt my favorite was Kris Kristofferson

Billy joe shaver has got to go down in history as one of the great classic country songwriters. His singing voice ain't the best, but it's raw and it's the real deal. Merle Haggard could take the prize for best classic singer song writer, and he really has an amazing voice and is a beautiful old guitar picker. Krist Kristofferson is great and way underrated. Willie Nelson is just mind blowing. Amazing guy, and real wise. Townes van zandt, guy clark, rodney crowell and steve earle are really great. and let us never forget the greatest one of all, HANK WILLIAMS. and no I didn't forget Johnny cash, and all the others, as this list could go on quite a long time, with nary a pop country bozo showin up in the mix even once.

Yes and no. I mean, some songwriters I guess don't have the talent or the desire to actually get up and perform their songs, so they find it easier just to write the lyrics and music, and then pass it on to someone else to sing successfully. Some singers can only be successful songwriters with the help of a co-writer to include a missing element.

I think Merle Haggard might have been the most consistently awesome. "Mama Tried", "Sing Me Back Home", "Silver Wings", "I Take A Lot Of Pride In What I Am" etc. Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Willie Nelson, and Billy Joe Shaver would all be close, but Hag is absolutely the man.

I believe Phil Vasser of the current. He has written hits for: Tim Mcgraw, Jo Dee Messina, Colin Raye ( and others I'm sure) not to mention himself. And BTW not to be argumentative but George Strait does NOT write most of his material. Most of his hits were written by someone else. In our research we discovered that only the earliest songs were written by George. I believe he said something to the effect that he owes his success to being " a good song picker".

Shel Silverstein, Walt Aldridge, Even Stevens, Tony Arata, Bob McDill, and Hugh Prestwood.

Look these guys up. You'll be amazed. They write for the greats.
