Try drinking water and laying down- if they stop, they are Braxton Hicks. For the most part, when you have real contractions, you get a feeling similar to how it feels when you have VERY bad diarrhea- that crazy crampy feeling in your intestines- but contractions are MUCH worse. Normally, you cannot talk through them and have to stop and breath. This is not always the case, I was in active labor and had only thigh pain but these are good rules of thumb.
Good luck!

I went through the same exact thing. Every woman is different with their contractions. Mine were severe ... I was at a 2 from the time I was 7 months along and my braxton hicks were about 4 minutes apart during the evenings. If you lay down, or take a bath and they slow, then that's not real contractions. My doctor suggested taking a benadryl at night to help me sleep since I had these every night and they were always false labor pains. I truly empathize with you. They are painful wether they are the real deal or not. I ended up having to be induced, but once I started going into my delivery process, I was thankful for the Braxton Hicks, because they made labor seem mild compared to them. My labor was much less of a pain than my contractions every thought of being haha. Just try to relax as best as you can. If they slow and spread further apart, you have nothing to worry about (other than the pain) Good luck. And congratulations to you.

Braxton are pre-labor contractions they make your body ready for labor. How long do your contractions last? If they are just short fast ones they are probably Braxton if they are long and hard call the ER or your Dr. You have a right to go back to the hospital-my daughter got sent home 4 times then she went back and had the baby 20 minutes later! If you feel funny down there call or go back-just don't wait too long or you may deliver at home! Congratulations on your new little one!!!!

Well real labor contractions tense up much of the body unlike braxton hicks which only tenses the uterus. Real labor contractions are MUCH more painful- braxton hicks usually aren't painful at all just a little discomfort. Labor contractions get closer together and are intensified by walking, showering, or other movement while braxton hicks contractions usually subside when changing positions. Real labor contractions feel as though you have the worst gas pain ever paired with extremely tense muscles!

Braxton hicks stop eventually. Labor does not stop and labor pains are WAY WORSE than Braxtons. If you are unsure - go to the hospital - thats what they are there for. I went 7 times and got sent home 7 times. When real labor started I kicked myself at how different they felt.

I got told I was having Braxton Hicks and got sent home. My little boy was born 11 hours later! My contractions were 10 minutes apart right up until an hour before the birth.

Everyone is different. If you truly beleive that you're in labour (you'll know!) then ask for a 2nd opinion before going home.

You can actually call the emergency room Labor and Deliver and talk to a nurse and ask them what you can do. Usually braxton hicks contractions are not consistent although they are not strong either.

Braxton hicks can stop if you drink a glass of water, or get up and move around. They are usually not in regular intervals either. When you are in real, active labor, trust me, you'll know. The pain is very intense. Braxton hicks can be uncomfortable, but are not near as painful as the real thing.

Labor contractions will be more evenly timed. Like when I first went into labor I noticed small cramping but it was every ten minutes on the dot so I knew something was different.

yeah BH are a little mild while labor hurts like hell. actually if you were in labor (which you may be) stage one, you can stay home until the contractions are closer and more severe.
