Or do you think the will to live would kick in and you would only want to get your own butt out of there?

I like to think that I would put others lives before mine, but I have never been in a situation like that before so I wouldn't know.

I think it depends on the situation.

For instance, I've been in "charge" of people in my roles as group counselor and class instructors in the past. If a life-threatening situation were to occur while I was operating in that role, my first instinct would be to protect those I was in charge of--and not to leave them at the mercy of an attacker. As leader, it would be a natural instinct.

Same thing with my children. I could never leave them behind to face a violent attack alone. I'd rather die trying to save them then live knowing I had done nothing to save them.

However, if I was at, say a policeman's convention, and an attacker came then, I think I'd likely hurry to get out of the way and leave the trained pros do their thing. Sometimes, what I would have to offer, isn't always the best defense. I'm not trained in mortal combat, nor do I carry any sort of weapons. If I saw where I could be of help (such as escorting the elderly or the very young out of harms way) then of course I would do so.

I've been a few dire situations where I've needed to keep my head, not many, but enough to know that I usually hyperventilate after the fact--and not during. I've never been a group, though, during those situations, but on my own and that might change things.

I do know, though, that people tend to have a stronger impulse to protect those they feel stronger than. For instance, if someone is rude or obnoxious to me, I tend to hesitate, be a little unsure about what to do. Yet if someone is rude or obnoxious to my grandmother--watch out! :)

Hope that makes sense.

I hate to be a "wet blanket" but from what I've seen & heard, no, not most, & not even many. When people panic, they tend to think only of self survival, & they will, in the process, sometimes trample others to death. That is NOT to say that there haven't been incredible people who have actually sacrifcied their lives for others. & have known they were doing so! I think it would be difficult for anyone who hasn't been in a situation, to say 100% what they'd do. I know what I would do, because I've put my life in danger five times, to save someone, (three times, strangers). & I believe it's something in our nature that just goes on automatic--not something we ponder first.

I think most people value human life - so if they see someone in jeopardy they forget about themselves (even tho they are humans also). The instinct kicks in and people risk much to save others. -- pretty incredible, don't you think?

In first aid you are taught to secure your own surroundings before trying to help someone, cause whats the use if you and the person you are trying to help die? Now if my girlfriend were in danger I would do everything in my power to help her, even put my own life in danger. I wouldn't see the use of living the rest of my life without her.

But I wouldn't put myself in danger trying to help someone I completly don't know. Yes I would help them with everything in my power that is available to me at that time but without putting my own life in danger.

sadly, people would not act like we would hope they would...That is why we have romanticized the whole "noble hero" cliche.....People are bast*rd coated bast*rds with bast*rd filling....Sad but true.
