Hi
I just got a Bonsai tree a few weeks ago... Try contacting the person below I am sure he would be willing to help you out..

In the spring and summer time the bonsai needs to be water twice a week..
Set your Bonsai in a water filled container or sink. The water level should be about a half an inch above the top of the pot. Just leave the water for about 5 to 10 minutes and the water will be absorbed throughout the soil. Or you can water your bonsai directly at the top of the pot using a spray gun. But certain to water all around the trunk and not just the front. Keep watering until the soil is completely saturated.. Also, spray mist the foliage and moss occasionally with water. It allows your Bonsai to stay clean and cool.
Also, you need to fertilize with special bonsai fertilizer..
Apply the Bonsai fertilizer or Green Green (Plant food)
Avoid sunlight during 10am - 5pm. Bonsai should get 3 to 4 hours of medium sunlight daily. Remember to turn the Bonsai in different positions periodically.

I love Bonsai Elm Trees. Both Japanese and Chinese Elms make excellent bonsai specimen. They are very hardy and are easy to train into beautiful pieces of living art.

Just like any bonsai tree you want to use a free draining soil that takes on water well and releases it slowly. Lava rock, Per-lite, Pine Bark, and a little grit is my favorite soil mix for elms. Use a slow release bonsai fertilizer like a 10-15-10 blend in my opinion.
Elms like sun, my Japanese Elms do well in full Florida sunlight. I just have to make sure I don't let the soil dry out because they will die very quickly if I let them dry out in the sun.

Trimming is essential to maintain full foliage and the style of your tree. If you let it grow you will get long shoots of leaves, trim these back to the first 2-3 sets of leaves.

You will need to re pot your Bonsai tree about once every year when it is younger and once every year and 1/2 for older specimen.

This is a picture of a 8-10 year old Japanese Elm Bonsai in a 12" ceramic pot.

Please don't follow the advice from "lauri....". It is all wrong. You must NEVER set up a watering schedule, because so many species have different requirements, not only for water, but for light and fertilizer. You have to know the requirements for your individual species of tree. Your nursery lady is right, Chinese elm is good, and especially it can be grown inside or outside.....it is about the only species of tree than can be grown either way. You're certainly welcome to read the Bonsai Care page of my website:
