You can only figure this consistently for liquid measurements. A cup is eight ounces; there are 16 ounces in a pound; therefore, there are two cups in a pound. There's an old saying, "A pint is a pound the world around."

But as a previous responder indicated, it makes a difference whether you're talking about flour or butter (because mass and weight are not the same thing for dry measurements).

I've looked in a Smoothie recipe book which gives a list of cup conversions. 1lb=16oz., so; 1cup raisins=6oz.. 1 cup wheat flour= 41/2 oz. 1 cup rice=7oz. 1 cup sesame seeds=6oz.. To take a rough estimate 1lb is aboput 21/2 cups. Hope this helps.

There's a little trick question that I heard.

Which will fall faster? a ton of feathers? or a ton of bricks?

The answer is the same time.

You are trying to compare volume and Weight which are 2 completely different things. Volume is how much space an object takes up. Weight is the gravitational pull between the object and the earth.

How many cups of what? A cup of flour doesn't weigh the same as a cup of butter.
