This lame credit card company is always trying to send me a check for $8. If I cash the check, I'm automatically enrolled in some crappy program that charges me $200/year.

It's insane. Why do credit card companies try to trick people like this!?!?

Either call the Better Business Bureau (second link below) if you live in Canada or contact your local government representative to lay a complaint about misleading advertising. In Canada it is run by the provincial government The branch is called "Customer Protection Branch". It even gives you tips on how to lay your complaint in (first) link below. Remember, companies can only get away with wrongdoing if no one complains.

Bankers are thieves. Credit card companies are even worse. If they didn't have a corporate logo, they'd be arrested for extortion and racketeering.

They do it because it is extremely profitable. Nothing else matters to them.

They know that a lot of their target audience doesn't bother to read the details and would be delighted to get an $8 check.

They think of it as a sure way to make money (and don't care about the ethics of it).

Because for every 20 people that figure out its a scam, there is one person who falls for it. It's crappy, but the old add age is THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS FREE MONEY.
