The earth like the rest of the solar system formed when a large cloud of dust and gas colapsed under the influence of gravity. When such clouds collapse they tend to begin to rotate and this usually imparts a rotation on all the objects (in our case the sun, the earth, and the the other planets) which formed from that cloud. The earth is still rotating today because of its inertia. That is to say, because nothig has stopped it from when it was set spinning initally.
Tidal friction is however slowing it down very slowly.

The Earth's fee of spinning is slowing down! The Moon and the Earth are orbiting in what could nicely be a barycentric equipment with their uncomplicated centre of orbit no longer on the centre of the Earth yet deep under its floor. as the two work together with one yet another gravitationally they prepare a tidal drag, which no longer only bills for the sea tides here in the international yet in addition slowly drains orbital and rotational capability from the equipment. through fact the Moon is way less super than the Earth it has already lost a number of of its rotational capability, because of this gravitational tidal interplay, and now only spins around as quickly as a month. in the distant previous the Earth spun extra immediately and had a shorter day and in the distant destiny this is going to spin extra slowly and have an prolonged day. through fact the Earth-Moon equipment 'bleeds' rotational capability, through tidal interplay, the Moon slowly strikes faraway from the Earth at approximately 3 cm a 365 days, so as that the angular momentum of the equipment is conserved! even with the undeniable fact that, the solar will boost to a crimson great and destroy the Earth long formerly it spins right down to a end!

There is not much friction to cause it to slow down. When you spin a wheel on an axle, the axle has some friction that will eventually use up the energy that you put into it to spin the wheel, and the wheel will slow down and stop. But Earth is spinning in a vacuum, with no friction-producing bearing to slow it down.

When earth spins, it takes the atmosphere along with it and above the atmosphere, there is almost empty space and thus almost zero friction. But it may slow down over several billions of years.

people who spout the bs about gravity keeping the world spinning are fools!! gravity pulls the world the same regardless of the side, the reason it keeps spinning is because there is nothing to act on it to slow it down.

because god has made it that way and you do not need to know his reasons. Besides, right inside earth which is hollow there is a huge device which is powered by gravitrons (little fuzzy animals not unlike antigravitrons. They keep it spinning due to eliminating friction between the stratosphere and space and making sure conservation of momentum is true...

It actually is slowing down. The moon raises tidal bulges in the earth's oceans. These bulges are dragged around the earth by the moon's gravity. This dragging effect causes the earth's rotation to slow down. The effect is so small you won't notice it in your lifetime. If there were nothing "dragging" the earth, it would not slow down. Basically, it would coast forever.

it IS gradually slowing down, but the gravity of other planets keeps us rotating. also, there's not much out there of any mass to actually slow us down...
