You aren't 18, it won't show up on your record when you are an adult.

Punishment: Probably a few hours of community service.

Don't do it again and don't worry about it.

Well, if you are under the age of 18 the good news is it will disappear once you reach 18. If you are over 18 and the fact it is a first offense you can ask the court for mercy sorta speak and have it espunged (it never happened. it will be closed.) At most you will probably pay a fine and receive probation. This also depends on how much you stole. If it is valued at lets say over $500.00 the punishment would be more severe (not to get into boring legal stuff.) But it doesn't sound as if the shoplifting offense was at this level. Insofar, as work again if you are over 18 it can certainly effect your work prospects, but again you (your attorney) can make the argument in court since it is a first offense and you are truly sorry to have it espunged since it would hurt your chances for future employment. Good luck. You'll be okay.

For a first offense, you'd probably get a short term of probation and/or community service. Learn from it. This doesn't screw up your life, although it sure makes a mess of a few months of it.

You already know it was a dumb thing to do - so be sure it's your last time. You aren't the first person, nor will you be the last, to do something like this.
