The manual mentioned be a good idea, they only about $15-20.
This sounds like the timing is off. Did you remove the distributor? If, you did then you may not have got it back in correct. When I have seen them do this, the distributor is 180 degrees out of time. You need to get the number one piston on TDC and it need to be on the Compression Stroke and not the Exhaust Stroke. Removing the valve cover and watching the valves will help and put the timing mark on the Harmonic Balancer on TDC mark. Insert the Distributor with the Rotor pointing to the Number One Plug Wire on the Cap.

When I know for sure I am 180 degrees off I just pull the distributor up enough to turn the rotor 180 degrees and put back in. So, if it point away from you, you just turn it to point toward you.

Are you sure you've wired the distributor correctly?

It could be due to cross-firing from mis-wiring, or the timing is really off. You might want to do a rough timing adjustment, with the #1 at TDC on the compression stroke and then make sure the rotor is close to the #1 wire hole in the cap; adjust the distributor if not.

you could have the distriburator 180 degrees out or you have a couple of plug wires crossed.
