Is it worth investing in getting a diesel car and a conversion kit? Do you really end up saving money not paying for gas?

Its all in the numbers. If you drive a lot and figure you burn 20 gallons of fuel a week, than you are going to spend about ten hours a week making bio diesel from cooking oil. IT has to be filtered and processed to burn efficiently. Yes there are kits to do it, but it is still a lengthy process.
Using straight cooking oil has been tried but you have to start your car on diesel and warm it up before switching to cooking oil. Also for best results you should heat the oil up before it enters the engine. I use B80 bio diesel and it is 80% diesel and 20% vegetable oil. It doesn't seem to have nearly the issues that straight cooking oil does.

The last time I looked at diesel prices they were much higher than gasoline prices (in New England). Where do the savings come in?

As far as biofuel you need a steady supply of that oil and even for restaurants that are motivated to make biofuel there is already a scramble to get enough starting oil. And they are just using it for heating so their needs are smaller than yours.
