depending on where you are many mechanics schools offer transportation. Lincoln Tech is on such school. You can also check with your state department of labor. They often can help you get to job training classes through government grants they received.

You need to study two subjects more then anything:
Math, and science,,a good grounding in basic math and general science will go a long way in understanding mechanical systems anywhere.
.
and most important:
English, (or your native language)!
Yes, in all my years as a mechanic, the dumbest reasons for a mistake was misunderstanding a work order! You will need to know how to read and read well, this means understanding what you are reading.
You will need to study manuals and books and instructions on a computer screen, so don't ignore the basics!
.
After this, basic mechanical systems, automotive technology and just basically willing to get your hands dirty and loving every minute of it!
.
Remember, any grease monkey can replace parts, it takes a smart mechanic to know When and Why!

If you want to be really good, you need a complete understanding of the fundamental basics. Many guys think they know cars and completely forget the simple basics. You probably already have an idea of what you enjoy doing the most whether it's repairing suspension, working with EFI, or whether it's American musclecars or Japanese sports cars. There are lots of books and manuals at www.motorooks.com. If you really want to step up to a new level check out the books from Carrol Smith like Tune To Win, Engineer To Win, and Prepare to win.

Take a good hard look at being a mechanic and think.Car sales are down across the country and the amount of money on tools you will need. And you will never make the money for the skill level you become.Take my word on this ive been in dealerships over 30 years.
