a nail punch should have a small dimple in the end, you can get several different sizes depending on what size nail you need to punch in. if your punch has a point to it you have been sold a centre punch, no good for punching nails.

There is a tool called a nail set that is made for just finishing nails, not for standard head (common) nails. It has a dull point that goes into the center dimple on top of the head of a finishing nail and stays there in the center while you hit the finishing nail down.
It is not sharp and not like a dart so I don't know what you received at the store.

Sounds like the right tool, wrong size. The tool is called a nail set. There are different sizes of nail sets. A nail set is supposed to drive the head on a finish nail below the surface of the wood. The different sizes depends on what size nail you are using. The bigger the nail, the larger the head. There are also Brad Drivers. Those are used for brads, which are smaller than a 2d finish nail. These tools where not made to ,"shift" nails ,but to ,like I said, drive the heads below the surface of the wood. Are you asking for the proper tool? And for the size, a set for a 6-8d nail would be a safe guess.Bye

Sounds like you were sold some type of punch not a nail set. The nail set will have a flat end I'll bet the tool you have now has a pointed end. I'd go back and ask for a nail set - it won't look like a dart

a "dart" shape would be too sharp in my opinion.
Try a centre punch, if you haven't got one of those try a 3 inch nail on top of the nail head, sharp tap with a hammer and you are done.
a 3 inch nail wil have a dull point and is soft enough not to damage the head of your floorbaord nails

Long nails can be harbingers for bacteria, specifically if they are artificial, but they are good for scratching and beginning those little foil wrapped containers that will are so hard to get in to.
