WGN (9) and WCIU (26) in Chicago show home Cubs games in Hi-Def, but away games in standard def. Why is that? When the Bears play away or home it gets shown in hi-def all the time.

It is dollars and cents.
Only the Cubs and Sox home games are in high def. The reason why is it would take an additional crew to bring the road games, which means double the travel expenses. So they right now only show home games. This will probably change in a year or two as more and more channels are stations broadcast in high definition.
