This is presumably a matchup between the two toughest land animals. Other worthy animal entries can always be debated, but let's just go with these two.
In this imaginary fight,
1. Both species are represented by the largest example of the animal previously documented.
2.Terrain is not a factor.
3. It is a fight to the death.
4. Both animals have not fed in days.
I'm pretty confident in my choice, but I want to hear other cases first. Scientific data would be greatly appreciated, like 'Tale of the Tape'-like figures on who's got the edge in size/strength/aggressiveness, etc.
Note: I do not advocate harming animals in reality, and I would not approve of actually setting this up. It's just an interesting conversation.
LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!

Gorillas move around by knuckle-walking. Adult males range in height from 165-175 cm (5 ft 5 in-5 ft 9 in), and in weight from 140-200 kg (310-440 lb). Adult females are often half the size of a silverback, averaging about 140 cm (4 ft 7 in) tall and 100 kg (220 lb). Occasionally, a silverback of over 183 cm (6 feet) and 225 kg (500 lb) has been recorded in the wild. However, obese gorillas in captivity have reached a weight of 270 kg (600 lb).[4]
Kodiak bears are generally considered to be among the largest of all terrestrial bears, being comparable in size to the Polar Bear. Altogether, sixteen of the twenty largest brown bears killed by hunters have come from the archipelago. A large male can stand over 3 meters (10 ft) tall when on his hind legs, and 1.5 meters (5 ft) tall when on all four legs.[3]
Boars (male bears) can weigh over 700 kg (1,500 lbs) after feeding on spawning salmon.[4]
The first thing I notice is 6 ft, 450 lbs versus 10ft, 1500 lbs..... The kodiak(largest grizzly, which is a type of brown bear) is 3 times the gorilla's size!!! Right off the bat, I think the gorilla gets its butt whooped. A grizzly (I just know this from my Dad working at fish&game) can easily have 6-inch claws... gorillas, like people, have fingernails...
both have vicious canine teeth. A large male grizzly can take a .357 magnum to the head several times without any skull penetration (I know this because one of the wardens was mauled during a release and his .357 didn't do sh**)... So I have no choice but to give this fight, very easily, to a grizzly of the aforementioned size. They can run faster, they are 3 times the size, 6 inch claws... the Grizz wins.

I say the Grizzly Bear hands down. Large grizzlies weigh about 600 pounds and are 7 feet tall. Silverbacks run a bit smaller - 5 1/2 feet tall and around 450 pounds. Grizzlies can attack with their vicious jaws as well as their long, sharp claws. Grizziles are also faster. The gorilla's only chance would be biting at the throat of the grizzly, but with the grizzly's speed, I don't see that happening.

There use to be a show called "Animal Face-Off" where I believe they did a scientific virtual battle between the two animals. The outcome being a draw then a rematch, so Google it and check the data rather than debate without accurate or measurable scientific facts. Good luck...Not all bears weigh 1500lbs. The "average" bear (black or brown) is smaller than the Silverback Gorilla. Size of the largest bear "Kodiak" at 1500lbs doesn t guarantee victory against the Silverback who pound for pound is one of the strongest animals in nature. Something to think about when you see a smaller man beat a larger one.

First off ill start with strength. The grizzly bear can only lift about 1102 pounds whereas the gorilla can lift over 4409 lbs that is more than to family cars. Next i will start with body mass and height the grizzly does get UP TO 8 feet but has an average of 5 to 6 feet (a common mistake) , less impressively the gorilla averages 5.5 to 5.9. feet. As for weight, the gorilla averages between 215 lbs and 484 lbs and the grizzly averages 1190 in weight. (easily thrown around by the gorilla). As for intellect the grizzly is easily outmatched no explanation needed. As for fighting styles the gorillas style is much like humans with punching and biting and also tackling, which they have arms nearly as long as their bodies for long distance powerful blows, and many forget this but they have been known to pick up and utilize boulders as weapons and tools for combat. They also can climb on their opponents back with their tremendous agility and beat them from behind with powerful blows possibly to the spine or rib cage. The grizzly uses a mauling technique a primitive animal instinct, and does have some advantage its claws and height but as I said earlier its weight means nothing because of how strong the gorilla is. And ill also factor in speed which does no really matter close range but ill do it. the average running top speed of a grizzly is 30 mph compared to the gorilla which is 25 is not that significantly damaging. (THE GRIZZLY IS NOT MUCH FASTER AT ALL). Finally biting force the biting force of a gorilla is surprisingly more than a grizzly I did not even know this I had to do research gorilla at jaw shattering 1300 pounds per square inch and grizzly at 1200 pounds per square inch the gorilla wins and takes my vote. I think the gorilla because it is nimble would get on the back of the grizzly and use its devastating strength to break ribs and possibly the grizzlies spine and if this failed it would pick up a 3000 lb bolder and finish the job. thank you for reading

Grizzly Bear, that's why it is aptly named, Ursus horribles. The grizzly climbs, has long slashing claws and is suited to any terrain. These 3 factors would take away any of the gorilla's advantages.

its about more than just size. Grizzly's struggle with agility and intelligence. this is why in the documented fights grizzly's have been the majority loser to cougers, which are smaller and less powerful than the silverback gorilla. My vote would go to the silverback gorilla. the grizzly its just a big target that barely moves. the silverback would be able to take advantage of this.
