Franklin Roosevelt led the US victoriously out of the two most trying events in the 20th century, maybe even in American history: The Great Depression and World War 2.

Many were great for a variety of reasons. Each helped shape us into what we have become in their own ways, some better than others.
I think in my opinion it would be Reagan.
Reagan was the Great Communicator. Brought an end to the cold war, made Americans proud to be Americans with a sense of infinite optimism. Fixed Carter's screwy economy and won re-election carry almost every single state alongside an 80% approval.

1 Washington For the simple fact that he would not accept Being King
2) Lincoln: He only saved the Republic
3) Teddy Roosevelt: Because his progressive Republicanism we now have national parks, and canned food without human fingers in them
4) Ronald Regan. He revitalize individualism, returned our nation to capitalism after the dark days of FDR. Kicked the crap out of the Russians. And made Americans proud to be Americans again
5) Thomas Jefferson; Purchased 2/3 of American for 2 million dollars. And promoted the concept of limited government. He actually proposed eliminating every law passed by congress every 20 years to reduce bureaucracy.

This is a no-brainer for me. It was Ronald Reagan. He did what he said he would do, he was honorable (He didn't even remove his suit coat while in the Oval Office out of respect for that office.), he ended the Cold War, brought down the Berlin Wall and gave this country a solid foundation upon which to build a great economy.

I would say FDR or Lincoln and certainly NOT Reagan. (Your set up didn't work). When someone is refered to as late it means they are deceased. Any of the Presidents except Carter, Both Bushes and Clinton would fit.

George Washington because he the only one that WASN'T a politician. The worst was FDR, who was a liar whose policies brought us deeper into depression. Nothing has destroyed our country more than his Raw Deal. Not to mention, his best friend was Stalin.
