i'm not exactly a noob at computers. i've had experience in setting up new components in my older computer and how the basic architecture works.

anyway i finally have enough money to build a great gaming system. I got it pretty well organized, with a spreadsheet of all the parts and their prices in many different combos. Basically my question is wether this set-up will work good or not and any other thoughts you have about it. I'm getting all my parts from newegg.com and my specs are as follows:
MSI P6N SLI Platinum_ MB
Core2Duo E6600 conroe @2.4Ghz
A-DATA 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit
Apevia Iceberg 680watt PSU
EVGA GeForce 7600GT 256MB
Western Digital Caviar 160GB Sata2 HDD
ASUS black SATA DVD burner 18XDVD-R....
XP Professional With SP2B
APEVIA X-Plorer Black/Blue Steel ATX Mid Tower
minus shipping this should all cost about $993.92

Great spec, I would just change a few things :
160GB to 320GB, you will need it and for little bit more than a 160GB
XP Home should do for your needs, unless you are into networking, saving a bit there.

If i were building this i would change from Western Digital hard drive to a Maxtor or Seagate brand.Western tends to be on the noisey side and are not as reliable.I"ve not had problems with Maxtor or Seagate,i have with Western.I have a Maxtor that ive used every day for 7 yrs.and not 1 problem. On the other hand i used a Western for 13 months and it went belly up.Just my thoughts on the matter. You can get a 300GB from Maxtor.com for $95.00

It would be of a faster help if you have an external enclosure that you could use to read your hard drive using other pc/laptop so you can format and wipe off all the datas (and you can even scan it first for possible viruses and do some backup if necessary).. You should also have an installer cd for linux after hdd had reformatted..

You can save quite a bit by downgrading that PSU a bit. Do you plan on playing games, specifically graphically intense games like FPSs? If so you may want a better graphics card. I'd get a 500Watt PSU and use that money to get a 7800GT instead.

The world will give you their answerer's based upon their values or lack there of.

You only need to ask yourself, why you made the choices that you did and if you are happy with your answerer's buy it.
